On 8th May, 1916, 1st London of 167 Brigade, 56th Division, went into the front line at Hebuterne on the Somme, for  8 days. Half an hour after midnight on 16th May, the enemy commenced a heavy bombardment, including tear gas shells, of their front line and the support and communication trenches. The British artillery responded quickly and no infantry attack materialised. By 2.30am all was quiet again.  However a great deal of damage had been done to their positions including a Lewis gun post on the Puisieux Road which was put out of action. During this brief action 9 men were killed, one of whom was Horatio Baron.
